Angie Stone (aka Angie B.), Blondy, and Cheryl the Pearl, members of 1970’s female Hip Hop Group “The Sequence” are outraged, hurt and disappointed that since the inception of VH1’s Hip Hop Honors award show in 2004, they have been snubbed once again.

“This is the sixth time our work and legacy has been overlooked at the Hip Hop Honors” said R&B soul artist Angie Stone.  “And this time we will express the disappointment we continue to endure.”

VH1 decided to revive the awards show this year for the first time since its last airing in 2010.  The 2016 Hip Hop Honors will air on Monday, July 11^th focusing on legendary female Hip Hop artist.   Queen Latifah, Lil Kim and the Hip-Hop duo Salt –N- Pepa are this year’s honorees and Eve as host.

Although they made no fuss of previous shows, trusting and believing that their time would come; this time the trio Angie B., Blondy Chisolm, and Cheryl “The Pearl” Cook feels undermined and disrespected and want their voice to be heard.

“They’re honoring “female” Hip Hop legends” said Stone.  “We definitely should have been included in the celebration this year for sure!”

The truth is, before any of the 2016 honorees rose to fame, “The Sequence” had already paved the way and opened the doors for them to walk through.  In the late 1970’s and early 1980”, the trio were signed and making hits.

As a matter of fact, Queen Latifah was born in 1970 and was just a little nine years old girl when the teenage group “The Sequence” released their most notable Hip-Hop anthem “Funk You Up”.  The song was the first rap record released by a female group and second single to be released on the popular Sugar Hill Label.  “Funk You Up” continues to be one of the most sampled and remixed rap hook, revised by many artist and producers.

“After our friends the “Sugar Hill Gang” was honored during the first season of VH1’s Hip Hop Honors, we were excited knowing that eventually our day would come”, said Angie Stone.  “But after this years’ slap in the face, we can no longer be silent and wait for VH1 to respect our legacy!”  “Not while new up and coming artist like Bruno Mars continues to sample our music and reap the benefits from our creativity!”

While discussing her displeasure with Mona Scott (creator of VH1’s most successful franchise “Love & Hip Hop”), Angie Stone said, “How can VH1 not know about us when in 2010 Queen Latifah, Bahamadia and I collaborated on Erykah Badu’s “Love of My Life” project with a remix of “The Sequence” song “Funk You Up”?”  Scott stated that it is just an oversight, then Stone responded, “Everyone is aware of our work and we are just appalled and feel demeaned – hell, Old Dirty Bastard, Trina and Dr. Dre sampled the song and the list goes on and on!”   

The consensus is if VH1 truly wanted to honor female legends this year, then they should have done their research to reach back and recognize “Unsung” trailblazers of the genre.  Many of the legends are dead and gone, but these ladies are still here, especially when the legendary and amazingly talented Angie Stone continues to be a relevant viable force in the music industry.  She has made history with her chart-topping hits and unmatched songwriting skills until this day.  Stone has even crossed-over to television, stage and film; which has also been honored (Boyz N the Hood) at the VH1’s awards show.

The group feels like it is just pure reckless and undermining that VH1 neglected their contribution to Hip-Hop.  “How can Hip-Hop be a huge part of VH1’s brand and they not know its history?”  “The Sequence” is a pioneer of Hip-Hop and their music legacy is documented in Yale’s Anthology of Rap, and was featured in Cash Box by Billboard; which is a huge honor.”  “These places are where the true timeline of rap is chronicled.” said Angie Stone to Mona Scott during their telephone conversation.

VH1 has not extended an invitation to “The Sequence” to be presenters, speakers, or to host the Hip Hop Honors.  They continue to by-pass their legacy for those who have since dominated the game.  “We acknowledge that many have surpassed us in the Hip-Hop industry, the once male dominated genre, but an acknowledgement is like gold to many of us who feel forgotten and replaced.” said Stone.  “We don’t want a ticket to the show like some scratch off – we want our rightful place in history!”

Collectively, the trio is saying that is doesn’t matter if it wasn’t intended or not done maliciously, because as a major network, VH1 should do their homework and bring truth and dignity to their projects.  At this point, the group feels that a thank you, an acknowledgement, or honorable mentions just isn’t enough: “Recognition and Honor would be appreciated.”  “Just don’t make us feel like you’re trying to kill our legacy!” said Stone.  “My legacy is just as important, if not more important to be acknowledged because now I am a grandmother” – “I want to leave a legacy for them too!”  “We laid the leg-work and I’ve worked my ass off for this business, and to see the newcomers rise to fame – many off the backs of those of us who blazed the trails lighting their way – I am deeply hurt.”

Angie Stone told Mona Scott (who managed Missy Elliott) that the women of Hip-Hop don’t stick together and don’t look out for one another.  She expressed that although she is happy and proud of all the honorees, Salt –N- Pepa are replicas of “The Sequence”.   “Why should we eat poop while rising and creating, just to see the newbies eat caviar?” said Stone.

If the industry’s stealing, remixing, revising and re-interpreting “The Sequence” song isn’t enough to bruise their egos; being totally negated and unrecognized in the industry that they were proud to champion is just plain blatant and foul!

ABDUCTED 9-YEAR OLD ATLANTA BOY SINGS HIS WAY TO FREEDOM

Monday, April 8, 2014, a little 9-year old boy living in South Atlanta (Fairburn) was abducted by a strange man who baited him by putting money on the ground.  Young Willie Myrick went outside to get a tool he left in his dog cage when he spotted the money on the ground near a tree.  He was then grabbed and put into a nearby car and drove around for a few hours by the man.

Today on the Ryan Cameron Morning Show on V-103, the little boy’s guardian said that it was unusual for him to not follow instructions and leave the yard.  When she noticed that he had not returned, and was nowhere to be found after canvassing the neighborhood for at least 10 minutes; she called the Fairburn police and reported him missing.

Radio personality and co-host Wanda Smith asked little Willie what he did to get the man to let him go free and he told the radio listeners that he began singing the popular gospel song “Every Praise” by Hezekiah Walker.  Ryan asked him what the man said to him while he was singing, and he said “He told me to shut up, but I just kept on singing”.  He said, “I think I got on his nerves, so he pulled over and told me to get out the car”.   It was a touching moment when Ryan asked to little Willie to demonstrate how he sang the song and Willie began singing the lyrics, “Every praise, is to our God, Every word of worship is one accord, Every Praise, Every Praise is to our God”.

The boy was released unharmed in an East Point neighborhood, several miles away from where he was snatched.  He knocked on a door of a nearby residence, but the people would not open the door, fearing it was a hoax.   There is a sketch of the man who was described as driving a grey four door Honda, with dreadlocked hair, a tattoo on his upper arm, wearing Khaki shorts and a white tee shirt with a Nike logo on it.  If you know of anyone who fit this description or have recently cut off their hair, please report it to the authorities in East Point, Georgia.

PHAEDRA PARKS' HUSBAND'S FRAUD ARREST DISGRACES FIRST FAMILY OF RHOA

Apollo Nida, husband of Bravo's Real Housewives of Atlanta reality star Phaedra Parks was arrested Thursday on charges of bank fraud and identity theft according to a report by the AJC. 

A federal investigation that began in 2012 gathered enough evidence to arrest a woman name Gayla St. Julien (aka Nee O'Neal) in September of 2013 in connection with suspicious bank deposits totaling over 3 million dollars.

According to St. Julien, Apollo was the mastermind behind the scheme, and created fake companies to collect customer's personal information for the purpose of stealing their identities to open bank accounts.  After months of further investigation that uncovered deposits of fake auto loan checks, stolen U.S. Treasury and retirement checks, Nida was arrested and then release on a $25,000 bond.

In light of the RHOA episode that aired January 26, speculations are circling that Apollo may have put his foot in his mouth when he argued with NeNe Leakes about how much money he's able to squander in strip clubs.  His comments that he spends his own money and not his wife Phaedra's, may further complicate his case, causing him to answer questions about his earnings.

Apollo spent over five years in federal prison for auto title fraud and is father of two young sons with wife Phaedra; Ayden 3 and Dylan 10 months.  He is awaiting a preliminary hearing on February 12.

So what will the naysayers do now since they won’t be able to say they threw away taxpayers’ money on an extravagant spectacle?  I would love to be a fly on the wall just to watch the enemies - who are always bold enough to show up – refuse to let loose and enjoy the fun, always lurking and seeking something they can spin into a snafu.  

I suspect music swirling in the room was a little JayZ, Stevie Wonder and of course Beyonce and John Legend.  It wouldn't surprise that our uncompromising first lady request a few off beat artist just to mix it up. 

I wonder who didn't bring their dancing shoes and had no choice but pull a Patty LaBelle and just kick those shoes off and enjoy a night full of fun, laughter and a whole lot of dancing, dancing, dancing

MADONNA LOOSELY USES RACIAL SLUR ON INSTAGRAM

Once again, within thirty days of backlash from a distasteful stunt, Madonna is under fire again. According to her, she is receiving negative press for using the N-word as a term of endearment towards her Caucasian son Rocco.  The 55-year old Queen of Pop who is known for her playful- girlish-charm uploaded a snapshot of her son on Instagram during his boxing match with the caption, "No one messes with Dirty Soap! Mama said knock you out!  #disn-----."

After a firestorm of controversy, Madonna issued the apologetic statement, "I am sorry if I offended anyone with my use of the N-word on Instagram.  It was not meant as a racial slur...I am not a racist."  She also said, "There's no way to defend the use of the word. It was all about intention...It was used as a term of endearment toward my son who is white. I appreciate that it's a provocative word and I apologize if it gave people the wrong impression. Forgive me."

The incident is just fuel on the fire for the music icon, causing onlookers to question the image she is portraying as a parent.  Just recently, at a family New Year celebration, Madonna posted photos of 13 year old Rocco and his friends posing with bottles of alcohol.

The multi-Grammy winning superstar has two other children - Lourdes Maria Ciccone and a black adopted son David Banda Mwale.  The Michigan native, born Madonna Louise Ciccone, trained with African-American dance legend Alvin Ailey and worked with a multitude of African-American performers and musicians most of her career.

   

The reactions to a white person’s use the word is viewed as insensitive and a disregard that the word garners hurtful degrading overtones towards people of color.  Short of making the use of the N-word a felony or a misdemeanor, I don’t know what will or can be done to mark the conscientiousness of the world to think “bad” before the word rolls off their tongue or in this case, fingertips.

Rising star, Dawntavia Bullard's life growing up in Miami, FL was nothing short of unconscionable, but destiny has its way of making a smooth landing. The 5'4" petite, possibly size 2 actress is a real cutie pie who landed a role not only in Tyler Perry's upcoming movie "For Colored Girls who Considered Suicide when the Rainbow is Enuf", but the third installment of Martin Lawrence's most successful film "Big Momma's House 3". She plays former "Dream Girls" Anika Noni Rose's assistant in "For Colored Girls" and a cafeteria worker who really gives Big Momma a hard time.

Humble and modest she says her roles are small. But rest assure, there is nothing small about a role for a young lady who fought her way out of an abusive household at 18, moves to L.A. alone, studies acting and ends up on the silver screen. Dawntavia is a true inspiration story. Passionately without remorse, she tells the story that as long as she can remember, her mother has been a cocaine addict, and she is only 25; you do the math. Her way out was through poetry and a desire to help herself with hopes of helping her mother overcome her addiction. As therapy, she wrote and executive produced her story into an independent film called "Sounds of Poetry". What happens next is a true testament of "preparation meeting opportunity".

Another young rising star, Henderson Maddox a filmmaker born and raised in Atlanta, GA, learns of Dawntavia's script and offered to develop it into a film, starring none other than veteran actress, Robin Givens who plays Dawntavia's drug addicted mother. Speaking directly to other young people who may have a similar story, Dawntavia advises them to learn as much about their craft as possible and to never give up. She said, "Unfortunately, you got to be somewhat selfish in order to be successful". While she was worried and concerned about her mother, she could not offer her any assistance until she stepped out and helped herself. As a result of the film, her mother is now in treatment, working to become clean and rid of her addiction.

Mary Christine, or Tina as she was called, was the daughter^[2][3] of construction worker Thomas Leslie Brockert and his wife, home renovator Mary Anne. She spent her early childhood in Mission Hills. Her ethnic heritage was Portuguese, Italian, Irish, and Native American.^{[citation needed]} In 2005, while visiting Louisiana, she had discovered that her paternal ancestors once lived in New Orleans.^[4][5][6] She took to singing naturally, performing Harry Belafonte's Banana Boat Song by age two. She also developed a fondness for singing the songs of Motown, and her self-professed “gift from God” would become fine-tuned as the years progressed.

 

When she was eight years old, her parents began sending her on auditions which, among other things, netted her an acting role on The Beverly Hillbillies, credited as Tina Marie Brockert.^[7] She also sang at the wedding of actor Jerry Lewis's son when she was 10 years old. Reared in a Roman Catholic household, she learned to play the piano under the tutelage of two nuns and later taught herself the guitar, bass, and congas. She would go on to form a semi-professional R&B band with her younger brother Anthony and their cousin.

Labor Day weekend in Union City, Georgia was more than typical and boring. Although few businesses have relocated from the South Atlanta City, a concert featuring Oakwood College graduates, 80's R&B sensations revived the town with a crowd that looked like a sea of people. The crowd was so massive that the Union Station Mall parking lot where the stage was set required two additional viewing screens to make the concert worth the supporters time.
